Tom O’Gorman - Irish U19 Champion
Congratulations to Tom O’Gorman (P6N) on a remarkable performance in winning the Irish U19 chess championships 2015. Aged only 12, Tom is one of the youngest to win the national title since its inception in 1948. Many previous winners have gone on to become Irish Champions, Olympiad team members and International Chess Masters. Tom has been a member of the Irish Glorney-Gilbert team for the past 2 years at U12 and U14. This win boosts his chances of selection for the Irish U19 team this year.
Alice O’Gorman and Ross Beatty are also in the hunt for selection at U19 Girls and U14 respectively. These three, together with Sasha Bistani and Andrew Hamilton represented St. Andrew’s at the Millfield International last October.
The senior school chess club meets Thursday and Friday lunchtimes in room 1.01. The club is looking to field teams in Irish and International schools competitions. Students are encouraged to drop in and give it a go!
