Events

Seachtain na Gaeilge is a national and international celebration that runs up to St Patrick’s Day.  Seachtain na Gaeilge is an opportune time to consider the importance of our language as a central part of our culture and heritage.  Seachtain na Gaeilge and St Patrick’s Day celebrations places Ireland at the centre of a worldwide audience and also encourages the Irish nation to focus attention on, and to celebrate, its culture and heritage. No other small country in the world is given the opportunity to place its culture and heritage at centre stage of a worldwide audience every year.

St Andrew’s College, as an international College, has its own international audience and it embraces many different languages and cultures. During this week, and  throughout the entire school year, we take the opportunity to celebrate and promote our own Irish language and culture through various events and activities at the college. These events include:
  • Comórtas Tish Parsons: 1st year students complete a project based on mythological stories for entry into this competition. This project was introduced to St. Andrew’s as an apt memorial to the late Miss Letitia Parsons, a well-respected and admired teacher of the Irish Department.   She had a particular love of and interest in Irish Myths.
  • Comórtas na bPóstaer: 2nd year students embrace their creativity to produce a poster based on a well-known ‘seanfhocal’ for entry into this competition.
  • Tráth na gCeist:  An annual fun event in the form of a table quiz ‘as gaeilge’ for 1st years.
  • Céilí:  fun is had by various year groups each year where the students get an opportunity to prove themselves as true ‘Twinkle toes’!!
  • Ceol , Drámaí  agus Filíochta: Each year, students travel to drama productions produced by the theatre company ‘Fibín’. Musicians compile and perform a range of traditional Irish music to different year groups. Our very own, Mr. Mac Giolla Bhríde is among those who perform. Also, more recently, our 2nd year students have taken part in a concert where they perform song, dance or instrumental pieces closely related to Irish culture. Transition year students take part in an online poetry competition called ‘Clóbeo’ - an innovative concept which gets students creative juices flowing!
  • Díospóireachtaí: Irish lends itself well to students expressing their views in debates within the school and indeed against debating teams from nearby schools. It is a most enjoyable and challenging experience for any student who is competent in the Irish language.
  • St Andrew’s College is proud of the fact that we are an international College that embraces many different languages and cultures. During the school year we  place an emphasis on our own language and culture and we encourage our Irish students to use their Irish in an informal way, mar a deir an seanfhocal, Beatha teanga í a labhairt. which means A living language is a spoken language. We also encourage our international students to learn about our culture and language during the school year.

Imeachtaí
Is ceiliúradh náisiúnta agus idirnaisiúnta é Seachtain na Gaeilge a leanann ar aghaidh ar feadh coicíse roimh Lá fhéile Pádraig. Is am tráthúil í Seachtain na Gaeilge le smaoineamh a dhéanamh ar thábhacht na teanga – mar chuid lárnach dár gcultúr Gaelach agus denár n-oidhreacht dhúchas, de shaol beo na tíre. Tarraingíonn Seachtain na Gaeilge agus Lá le Pádraig aird an domhain ar Éirinn agus aird na nÉireanach ar a ndúchas féin. Níl deis ar bith mar seo ag aon tír bheag eile sa domhan mór a bheith i lár an Aonaigh i measc an phobail idirnáisiúnta gach bliain.
