Gael Linn Irish Language Debates

Six St Andrew's Students take part at the Irish Cultural Centre

On Wednesday 14th October, 6 students travelled to the Irish Cultural Centre in Clondalkin to participate in the Gael Linn Irish Language Debates. The Junior team consisted of third year students Caroline Doyle, Molly Lambton and Jude McCann. Their motion was Is miotas í cáirdiúlacht mhuintir na hÉireann (The friendliness of the Irish people is a myth). They faced opposition from Loreto College, Dalkey, Alexandra College and Dominican College Sion Hill. To our delight, they have succeeded in progressing to the next round of the competition which will be held in November.

Our Senior team comprised of transition year students Lucy Dornan, Ross King and Harry Deacon. Their motion was Tá a gcearta á bhfáil ag mná i gcúrsaí spóirt in Éirinn (Women in Ireland are getting their rights in sports). Again, they faced teams from the same schools as the Junior competition. However, they were unlucky to secure a place in the next round due to stiff competition at senior level which usually included students from 5th and 6th year. This was a great achievement for our TY students and we hope that they will participate next year.
