Glorney-Gilbert Chess Tournaments

Three Students representing Ireland

Three St Andrew's students have been selected for the Glorney-Gilbert International chess cups to be played in July in Daventry, England against teams from France, England, Scotland and Wales.

·         Tom O’Gorman (1st Yr) - board 1 on the U18 Glorney open team

·         Alice O’Gorman (3rd Yr) - board 1 on the U18 Gilbert girls team

·         Ross Beatty (2nd Yr) -  board 4 on the U18 Glorney open team

This is Ross’ fifth consecutive year playing in the Glorney-Gilbert International. Having been on the winning Stokes (U12) team in 2013 and last year’s winning Robinson (U14) team, this year he aims for a unique treble if the team can retain the Glorney.  Tom plays for the fourth year running and is also a two-time winner (Stokes ‘13 and Glorney ‘15). He plays this year aiming to be a first two-time winner of the Glorney cup.  Alice plays Gilbert also for the fourth year running. Having come agonisingly close to winning last year (2nd only on a tie-break), this year Alice leads out the Gilbert team aiming to go one better to win the Gilbert for the first time since 1979.

With three from twenty, St  Andrew’s has the largest representation from any one school in Ireland.

This is an unprecedented era in both Irish Glorney-Gilbert history (since 1947) and international chess representation from St Andrew’s.

Tom O'Gorman's name featured in article in The Irish Times on 26 May - to read it please click here.

Well done to all and best of luck in July.
