Practical Skills

CORE TRANSITION YEAR PRACTICAL SKILLS

Students will complete eight practical modules.

Digital Skills

The TY Digital Skills module is divided into two areas and students can choose to study either ‘Introduction to Coding’ or ‘Digital Photography’.

  • Introduction to Coding - In this module, students will be introduced to the basics behind coding using the scratch software.
  • Digital Photography - In this short module, the students are introduced to the basics behind digital photography.                                                                                   (8 weeks)

Critical Thinking

This module encourages students to develop an awareness of thinking critically about situations and ideas. It allows them to analyse and question, ensuring they can think ‘outside the box’. It encourages them to research topics in order draw their own conclusions and arguments.                                                                                                             (8 weeks) 

Public Speaking

This course gives students a reliable model for preparing and delivering effective presentations. Students will learn how organise talks clearly, write them memorably and deliver them confidently.                                                                                                           (8 weeks)

Basic Cooking

Students will be introduced to the basic skills of cooking using simple recipes.

Career Guidance

This module involves a general outline of the CAO/CAS system with a view to advising on career options.  A number of vocational interest and aptitude tests are completed in this module.                                                                                                                                           (8 weeks)

Development Studies

Development studies aims to explore a number of issues which affect Ireland and the world.  Issues raised will include:  poverty, debt and its implications, interdependence, prejudice and human rights.                                                                                                             (8 weeks)

Driver Education: 

This course is designed to explore all aspects of driver education. Road safety, driver responsibility and the Driver Theory Test are some of the topics that will be covered.                                                                                                                                                                                (8 weeks)

Mindfulness: 

At the basic simple level the mindfulness module is an awareness-raising exercise to give all students a taste of mindfulness so that they know about it and can return to it later in life if they choose to do so.                                                                                                (8 weeks)
